About

We are the Junior League of Detroit (JLD)

Above all else, our goal is to promote and perpetuate social change in the Detroit communities that will benefit most from it. By empowering women and providing valuable leadership training, we are giving local women the tools to get involved, put their talents to work, and positively impact the communities of Detroit.

Strength in Numbers

As one of hundreds of Junior League chapters across the world, we are a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI).Established in 1914, the Junior League of Detroit (JLD) plays an integral part in the development, improvement, and support of the communities of Detroit.

For over 100 years, our valued members have donated thousands of hours of volunteer time, continually working to help broaden the educational, cultural, recreational, and health opportunities for children and families in our much-loved community. Each day the JLD receives a request for assistance, information, or other resources. Our JLD has increased its focus on effective governance as distinct from day-to-day management, with the board’s focus being external, community-oriented, and directed to the future with a vision that engages with our community and its current and future needs.

Our Local Impact

Right now, our primary focus is working with women and children on issues such as food insecurity, literacy, and educational opportunity. We [provide direct financial assistance through our Community Assistance Grants, which are quarterly grants awarded to non-profit organizations providing services to improve the health and welfare of children in Wayne County.

The Junior League of Detroit offers its members educational and leadership training opportunities to work effectively on various community projects. Our plans include providing long-term support to women by working with our community partners as trained volunteers and providing direct financial support as well as supporting legislation surrounding women’s issues through our involvement with the Michigan State Public Affairs Committee.

Through our projects and programs, we continuously work to impact the lives of children and families and help build a better community. Since 1914, the Junior League of Detroit has completed 53 major projects in and around the City of Detroit and has awarded over $250,000 in community grants. The JLD provides training and leadership education that allows all women to use their talents in our community. If you’re interested in learning more about our current focus or developing your own civic leadership skills, we welcome you to learn more or connect with us.
