Michigan State Council of Junior Leagues

State Public Affairs Committee of the Michigan State Council of Junior Leagues (SPAC)

The Junior Leagues of Michigan represent nearly 9,000 women from the communities listed below, and comprise the Michigan State Council of Junior Leagues (MSC). Participating Michigan Junior Leagues include: Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Birmingham, Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo. Lansing, and Saginaw Valley.

While each of the nine Junior Leagues work toward promoting volunteerism and improving their own communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers within its own focus area, together the Leagues are committed to assuring that children have the opportunities and services essential for their optimal physical, intellectual, and emotional The Junior League of Detroit well-being. The Junior Leagues may advocate for public policies to promote this goal, so long as such actions are in accordance with external policy statements approved by the Michigan State Council of Junior Leagues.

The State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) of the Michigan State Council of Junior Leagues is dedicated to educating members and the general public on important issues and to advocating for change on behalf of those who do not have a voice.

In addition to meeting monthly as a committee with a hired lobbyist and meeting separately with state legislators and other advocates, SPAC hosts an annual Day at the Capitol event open to all JLD members. The President, President Elect and Immediate Past President from each League are members of MSC, and meet at least twice a year.

Policy Areas

SPAC’s two current focus areas are:

1) issues impacting children and youth in foster care and
2) issues related to human trafficking.
